Religion and Post-Cancellation TV Shows

Popular culture is like religion in that a sports team, band, television show, or movie series can bring people from around the globe together.  Looking specifically at television, much like the way religious figures gain significance posthumously, the same can be the case with television shows. One example is Freak and Geeks.  It only aired for a single season and was considered to be a flop, but since its cancellation it has gained a cult-like following across the country. A love for this show ties people together much like aspects of religions do. As soon as someone meets another person who has seen the show, an instant connection is made as each person shares their favorite characters and moments.  When two Jews meet each other and talk about their Jewish community, a similar connection is made and the same can be said with any religion.  The connection between two viewers of Freaks and Geeks seems to be stronger than most other shows.  Both viewers feel that they have found a hidden gem, unknown to most people, and finding another fan is  rare and therefore all the more meaningful. The way this show has created common experiences for people across the country is a very religious characteristic.
