Pop Culture is Like religion

Pop culture is like religion because it provides a way for people to form communities based on a meaningful ritual. Religion functions as a way for humans to form communities and find meaning through ritual and symbols. Pop culture functions in the same way. When fans watch the latest episode of a television show it serves a ritualistic function. Fans are setting aside a block of time every week for something that, to them, is important and meaningful. Then when they talk about it online or in person they’re forming a community based on the discussion and interpretation of that ritual. At the end the television show and community based around becomes more than just entertainment. It forms an important part of a fan’s identity. It provides a way for that community to show who they are and what is important to them.
