Pop Culture/Pop Religion: What is it?

Gideon Wertheimer

Pop Culture/ Pop Religion is a course that will challenge your ideals when it comes to religion. Religion is a very broad and arbitrary term used to describe a set of traditions that a group of people use to create a common identity. That definition means that many different rituals other than what society typically views as a religion could potentially be called a religion. Things as simple as being American or being a Trekkie fit just as well under the current definition of religion as Judaism and Hinduism. It is also interesting to see how the world not only depicts religion but how religious symbols and rituals are incorporated into everyday life. Advertising or belonging to a Star Trek Fan club incorporate many religious rituals that most people think are only used in "religious" context. Religious symbols permeate all sources of pop culture even when not if a fully religious context.
